Farmers Co-operative Dairy Limited started out as Twin Cities Co-operative
Dairy in Windsor, Nova Scotia by a few milk shippers. Mr. Harold Curry was
a milk producer and was elected President.
The first dairy they bought was Maple Leaf Dairy. This was followed by a
number of dairies in Nova Scotia:
-
Farmers Dairy - Halifax
-
Woodlawn Dairy - Dartmouth
- Elm Avenue Dairy - Elmsdale
- Fundy Dairy - Truro
- Meadowvale Dairy -
Truro
- Bridgewater Dairy
- Bridgewater
- Lunenburg Dairy -

- Halifax Creamery –
Halifax
- MacKenzies Dairy –

Superior Dairy –
Yarmouth, who owned the following:
- Acadia Dairy – Wolfville
- Annapolis Dairy –
Port Royal
- Metegan Dairy –

- Digby Dairy –

- Shelburne Dairy –

- Queens County
Dairy – Liverpool
Milk products were produced
in a number of plants until a new plant was built at Hammonds Plains in
the seventies.
Mackenzies Dairy in Windsor produced butter. This was the beginning of
producing Butter and Margarine in the spread plant in Middleton. They were
quite successful with a 20/80 spread.
Twin Cities started to produce Cheddar Cheese in a new plant in Truro in
the sixties. This was started in order to use up surplus milk the
shareholders produced. In order to be a shareholder you must be a milk
producer. No matter how large a farm you own or how much milk you produce,
all shareholders hold one vote.
Twin Cities stated the U.H.T. plant in Hammonds Plains. These long life
milk products were a hit with people who could not get fresh milk daily.
The line has been expanded to package milk shakes, juices and drinks.
Twin Cities Co-operative Dairy was changed to Farmers Co-operative Dairy
because people knew the Farmers Brand name, which dated back to the early
1920’s.
Farmers Co-operative Dairy is owned by 200 farmers and employs over 500
people.
The retail routes are run by independents and the wholesale routes are
company-owned routes. |
